A Michigan man charged with the assault of a sports official at a McCracken county youth basketball tournament in 2019 was sentenced to prison on Wednesday.

According to the McCracken Circuit Court Clerk, 42-year-old Keyon Menifield of Flint, Michigan, was sentenced to six years behind bars after accepting a plea deal.

McCracken County deputies responded to a basketball game involving high school age players at the Paducah Regional Sports Plex in April of 2019.

Deputies said there was a disagreement between referee Kenny Culp and Menifield, leading to Menifield punching Culp and knocking him unconscious.

Menifield fled the area before deputies arrived, but was found at a hotel and taken into custody.

In the attack, Culp received a broken collar bone, a cracked sinus cavity, and a concussion with brain bleeding.
