The Lyon County Sheriff's Office has awarded one local citizen with a $1,000 gift card for his actions during the December 10th tornado.

In a Facebook post Sunday the sheriff's office said that Sam Suitor took direct action on December 10th that possibly saved several lives in the community.

Suitor lives in the Blue Ridge community and had opened his home to seven neighbors and two dogs to ride out the storm. Suitor's home is one of the only homes in his neighborhood with a basement.  The Sheriff's Office said many homes in that area were totally destroyed that night.

Sheriff Brent White said he had received a call and then a visit from a neighboring sheriff who had collected donations on behalf of Lyon County. One donation was a $1,000 gift card from Lowes that was to be used by a deserving citizen in need. The gift card was given by a citizen from McCracken County who remains anonymous.

Suitor’s home was damage in the tornado, and White said because of that along with Suitor's actions, the Sheriff's Office felt he was the most deserving recipient of this gift.

The Sheriff's Office ended their post thanking Suitor for assisting his neighbors and they hope the gift card helps with the repairs.
