Officials from the Pennyrile Regional Energy Agency reported last week that land acquisition is more than 80 percent complete for a new natural gas pipeline linking five counties in western Kentucky.
The 53-mile-long pipeline will initially extend from north of Cadiz through Trigg, Christian, and Todd counties. It will have the capacity to expand up the I-24 corridor to also serve Caldwell and Lyon counties.
That area is currently served by a smaller pipeline from Tennessee, but recent announcements of large factories moving to the Pennyrile region brings the need to expand the supply.
The pipeline comes from the formation of the Pennyrile Regional Energy Agency, which began as an inter-agency agreement between the cities of Trenton and Guthrie.
The organization’s intent will be to develop underserved parts of the region, while trying to attract other industries and support the current infrastructure.
In 2022, the state of Kentucky provided $30 million to help fund the project. In August, the Todd County Fiscal Court received the latest $15 million payment from the state.
