A team from the National Weather Service determined that the tornado that struck near Lake of Egypt in southern Illinois on Sunday was an EF-3 with very destructive 150 mile-per-hour winds.
Results of the survey show that the tornado was on the ground for ten minutes on a path five miles long. It began 2 miles north of Goreville, just west of the I-57/I-24 interchange. It crossed both interstates, then proceeded east until it neared the western shore of Lake of Egypt.
It was 300 yards across at its widest, and resulted in one injury.
There was severe damage to hundreds of trees, some with the bark peeled off by the wind. Numerous power poles were snapped. One home had severe damage including a collapsed wall, and two manufactured homes were destroyed.
