On Monday large crowd joined Mayfield Mayor Kathy O'Nan, Fire Chief Jeremy Creason and the entire city firefighting crew for the long-awaited groundbreaking ceremony of the future Fire Station 1.

The new 18,000-square-foot facility on the bypass at Kings Drive will now begin construction.

The original fire station was destroyed, along with most of downtown Mayfield, in the devastating 2021 tornado.

The groundbreaking was originally scheduled in June but had to be postponed.

The next big step for the rebuilding of Mayfield will be the groundbreaking for the new City Hall and police station on October 3, on the court square where the original building was demolished.

Last April, the Kentucky legislature approved $25 million in funding toward the rebuild.

The public is invited to the ceremony at 10:30 a.m.
