Former Calloway County Sheriff Sam Steger spoke with West Kentucky Star Tuesday morning to reflect on his friendship with the Calloway deputy involved in Monday's shooting at the Marshall County Sheriff's Office.

Steger said he worked closely with Chief Deputy Jody Cash for many years and called him a good friend.

"He was such a good, kind, caring person to everybody. He never met a stranger, always very polite, very soft-spoken." Steger said, "The world has lost a great person in his character, compassion for what he did in the law enforcement community, and it's just a sad day for law enforcement."

Steger said it takes a special person with a special mentality to do what law enforcement is tasked with.

When asked if there had been a specific incident that would sum up Cash's character, Steger said there were so many, and he couldn't name just one.

"If you met him and had the pleasure to know him, you would not find a better person to work with, to have by your side. He was soft-spoken and kind, but he also knew how to take care of business." He continued, "That was his character. He was just a dedicated soul to doing the right thing and making the right decisions. Even when no one was watching, I guarantee you he was making the right decision. That's just him."

Steger not only served with Cash at the sheriff's office but also worked with him during their time together as Kentucky State Police. He said he knew Cash for nearly his entire career and called him a great man.

Kentucky State Police are investigating the incident. They said they would not release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts gathered.

Chief Deputy Cash and a suspect were both killed during the altercation. For the latest details on the investigation, see our story by clicking here.
