When Ashlin Lowery made a decision about her college major she asked herself “What could I do for the rest of my life that I will love?" Ashlin stated in an interview "The only thing I could think of was FFA. I guess I’ll be an ag teacher, so here I am.”
The September West Kentucky Star Teacher of the Month is Ashlin Lowery. She’s the Agriculture Mechanics teacher and one of the Future Farmers of America advisors at Massac County High School.
Lowery and her students were busy in the garage classroom when she was surprised with the award on Wednesday. Lowery is in her first year at Massac, but she’s been teaching agriculture for a while. In fact, some of her students from twelve years ago in New Mexico still contact her and she loves it. When asked if she would teach ag forever she said, “if I teach forever, it would be ag. I love it.”
You don’t have to live on a farm or know anything about raising animals or growing crops. In fact, those are the students ag teachers want. “Agriculture is still a very misunderstood industry even though it is the largest hiring industry in the world,” says Lowery.
She wants others to know that “All ag teachers do it for the love of students. We spend alot of time outside of class with kids; late nights, overnights. We typically have classes that do alot hands-on and we’re together all the time. We get to know students more than other teachers do and I think that’s a blessing!”
The award, sponsored by Scott Walker Construction, will continue through each month of the school year. All 10 Teachers of the Month from the 2022-2023 school year will be considered for Teacher of the Year in the 2023 West Kentucky Star People’s Choice Awards.
