“A fog machine and coffee,” said the excited 7th graders in Rachel McWilliams’ math class at North Marshall Middle. They knew exactly how she should spend her prize money as the West Kentucky Star Teacher of the Month for November. Staff from West Kentucky Star, sponsor Scott Walker Construction and school administrators surprised McWilliams with the award on Tuesday and it was apparent why she’s a favorite!
“My favorite part [about teaching] would definitely be the relationships I build every day. Each day is eventful. Something new is happening every single day,” said McWilliams. Those relationships were on display as the students even participated in the interview. McWilliams wants students to know that “math is important but it’s not the end all” and “even if you don’t necessarily like math, you can grow from it and appreciate it.”
Math is a subject some students despise, but her students have embraced it. She recently challenged them to raise their math test average and offered an incentive: she would do “The Griddy” and they could put it on TikTok. They exceeded the goal she set and are tracking the video’s views. It’s a win-win with Rachel McWilliams, the November Teacher of the Month.
The award, sponsored by Scott Walker Construction, will continue through each month of the school year. All 10 Teachers of the Month from the 2022-2023 school year will be considered for the favorite teacher in the 2023 West Kentucky Star Teacher of the Year.
