Making a classroom exceptional takes a truly exceptional teacher. Most teachers are exceptional! And the last Teacher of the Month for the 2022-2023 school year is no exception. Yes, the word “exception” was used multiple times because the Teacher of the Month for May is Darrah Jackson, a 5th and 6th grade exceptional educator at Murray Middle School.

Jackson, a Murray native, always wanted to be a teacher. She is truly dedicated to her students. Because she keeps many of her students focused in the classroom by using fidget and sensory items, she – of course – plans to spend her prize money on her classroom!

Now that she’s in her 6th year of teaching, she gets to see her students grow and develop past middle school. “I have a former student that just turned 18… Holy cow it has been that long! We’ve stayed in contact.” She wants her students to know “that I’m always your biggest fan. I’m always looking out for you and prouder than ever. I see your accomplishments and whatever you do in your future, I’m always a person that remembers you and thinks about you!”

Asked if she would teach forever if she could, she replied “That’s the plan!”

West Kentucky Star Teacher of the Month, sponsored by Scott Walker Construction, is awarded each month of the school year. This award rounded out the last school year 2022-2023. Jackson joins nine other teachers in the field for West Kentucky Star Teacher of the Year 2022-2023. Voting opens August 14th.
