Two Mayfield organizations are teaming up to start a Buddy Bench project as a way to honor and memorialize those lost in the December 2021 tornado.

The Mayfield Lions Club and the Purchase Player Community Performing Arts Center are partnering to ensure that none of the 24 who perished will be forgotten.

The goal of the groups is to collect and recycle enough plastic bottle caps to place benches honoring each person around Mayfield. The six-foot benches require 200 pounds of bottle caps for each one or a total of 4,800 pounds to produce all 24.

Sammie's Buddy Bench Project, an organization started by a now 14-year-old girl in Indiana, has already committed to donating one bench.

A barrel to donate bottle caps to the project has been placed outside the old Mayfield Vet Clinic on West James Street. They said donors could contact the Mayfield Lions through their Facebook page to have larger donations picked up.

For more information contact Mayfield Lions Club President Jeremy Prince at (270)619-6306 or by email at lionjeremyprince@gmail.com or Purchase Players Community Performing Arts Center Board Member Jaime Prince at (270)705-4205.
