Paducah Tilghman's boys track team captured the Class 2A state championship Friday in Lexington. The Blue Tornado defeated Ft. Thomas Highlands 81-80 at the University of Kentucky outdoor track facility.

It's Tilghman's 29th state title in track and field.

After Tilghman won the 4x400 meter relay, they were tied in the standings with Highlands with one event left, the long jump. Highlands didn't have anyone in the long jump event. Tilghman's Phillip Pruitt finished eighth, giving the Blue Tornado the state title.

Tilghman also won the 4x200, and Marcus Corbett won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.

Tilghman's winning 4x400 and 4x200 teams were comprised of Corbett, Nick Shelby, Bernard Williams and Lenny Grace. 

Grace finished second in the 110-meter hurdles.

The Blue Tornado's team of Shelby, Williams, Montel Williams and Jayden Freeman took second in the 4x100 meter relay.

Other high finishes for the Blue Tornado included Tyler Scarborough, third in the discus; Shelby, fifth in the 200-meter dash; and Grace, fifth in the 400-meter dash.

Tilghmans's girls squad finished fifth in the state, as North Oldham took the title. Aleja Grant took second place for the Blue Tornado in the 3200 meter run, third in the 800-meter, and fourth in the 1600.

Tilghman's girls 4x200 relay team took second, with members Miriah Donelson, Valesha Watson, Tajhanique Wood and Tanaisha Jordan.

Watson also finished fourth in the 100 meter dash.

Calloway County's girls placed ninth behind the efforts of Lily Lowe, who won the high jump, long jump and 300-meter hurdles.
