Fulton City High School’s boys’ basketball team is being placed in the hands of a seasoned veteran that knows how to win at the highest levels. Steve Dreher was officially announced as the head coach of the Bulldogs' basketball program on Monday, returning to the First District where he coached from 1984-1988.

Dreher takes over the program that was 8-19 last season and had been coached by Jimmy Long for the last five seasons, before taking the same position at Hickman County. Dreher brings 14 years of head basketball coaching experience to his new position, where he amassed a 258-169 career record.

After four seasons at Symsonia beginning in 1980, he spent four years as head coach at Carlisle County High School, six years at Paducah Tilghman, and then one year at Lone Oak before leaving education for private ventures in 1995.

During his coaching tenure, he was named First Region Coach of the Year three times – at three different schools - in 1984, 1986, and 1991. And, he was the Runner-up Coach of the Year in the state of Kentucky in 1991, when his Tilghman Tornado team won the First Region title and advanced to the state Final Four.

That 1991 team still holds the school record for wins with 32, and they were ranked as high as third in the state of Kentucky that season. That regional title was his second First Region title as a head coach, winning his first the year before at Tilghman.

Dreher will be teaching history and English at Fulton City High School.
