The McCracken County Mustangs put up a strong effort against Class 6A power from Birmingham, Alabama, George Washington Carver, but ultimately fell short as the Rams knocked off the Mustangs 39-26 at Marquette Stadium Friday night.

The ultimate story of the night for McCracken County happened to be on the injury front as junior quarterback Elijah Wheat and sophomore running back Hunter Bradley both exited the game with apparent injuries. No immediate word on the status of their injuries.

Carver would strike right out of the gate as Kobe Gunn scored from 7 yards out to give Carver a 6-0 lead just 46 seconds into the game.

McCracken County would immediately respond though as Kiael Waldon punched it in from 1 yard out to give the Mustangs a 7-6 lead with 3:53 left in the opening quarter.

Carver responded in the 2nd quarter as quarterback Matthew Young found Deatrius Williams from 12 yards out to make it 12-7 Carver with 4:53 left in the 2nd quarter.

The Mustangs responded quickly as Elijah Wheat ran it into the end zone from 12 yards out to give the Mustangs a 15-12 lead, but Wheat would leave the game at that point with his injury.

From that point on, Carver would outscore the Mustangs 27-11. McCracken County opens district play next week at Daviess County.

Mayfield (5-0) and Graves County (1-4) were tied 14-14 late in the first half. But the Cardinals scored 21 straight points before halftime, on their way to a 56-21 win, the Cardinals 10th straight against the Eagles.

The Eagles took a 7-0 lead on the first play from scrimmage when Cody Goatley ran 60 yards for a touchdown. The Cardinals answered on their first drive with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Jayden Stinson to Diaz Perry.

A six-yard touchdown run by Connor Guthrie put Mayfield back on top with 4:21 left in the half. After the Eagles failed on a fake punt, Stinson found Guthrie on a 40-yard touchdown pass. Four plays later, Guthrie returned a fumble 55 yards to give the Cardinals a 35-14 halftime lead.

It got worse for Graves County in the second half. After a fumble on a punt return, Kent Trey Matthews scored on a five-yard touchdown run to give Mayfield a 42-14 lead. Stinson scored on a one-yard run giving Mayfield a 49-14 lead. Then, Stinson found Neely on a 68-yard TD pass for a 56-14 lead.
