Dyer County (4-4) would find the end zone first on their second possession of the night as Jefhry Taylor got his first of three touchdowns on the night to make it 7-0 Choctaws midway through the first quarter.
While the first quarter
belonged to Dyer, the Mustangs (6-3) amped it up in the 2nd quarter,
scoring 20 unanswered points on their first three possessions of the
quarter.
The first drive of the 2nd quarter for McCracken
County was a 7 play 42 yard drive ending with a 16 yard pass from
Elijah Wheat to Franklin Hayes to tie the game at 7-7 with 9:13 left
in the 2nd.
On the Choctaws next possession, McCracken senior
linebacker Jack Holland picked off a pass from Dain Patterson and
returned it 40 yards to the 1-yard line. Sophomore running back
Hunter Bradley finished the drive off on the very next play, giving
the Mustangs a 14-7 lead with 8:10 left in the quarter.
On the
Mustangs next drive, McCracken County marched 54 yards on 6 plays
that ended with a toss to Franklin Hayes for a 16 yard score to give
McCracken a 20-7 first half lead. The Choctaws would respond with a
score of their own just before the half as Taylor found the end zone
from 5 yards out to make it 20-13 at the half.
Taylor would
pick up where he left off in the first half for Dyer County, as the
Choctaws sustained a 10 play, 60 yard drive concluding with a with a
1 yard run by Taylor for his third consecutive score for Dyer County,
evening up the score 20-20 with 6:06 left in the 3rd.
McCracken
followed that score quickly with a score of their own, this time with
an explosive play as Elijah Wheat found Tymar Halliburton on a 76
yard touchdown to give McCracken a 27-20 lead with 4:49 left in the
3rd quarter.
Dyer County came back in the 4th quarter with
another long drive; this time it was a 10 play, 71 yard drive ending
with a Dain Patterson 4 yard run for the touchdown followed by the
PAT to once again tie the game at 27-27 with 8:38 left in the 4th
quarter.
McCracken responsed with a 3 play 76 yard drive
concluded with a Elijah Wheat to Franklin Hayes for a 76 yard
touchdown pass. This was the third touchdown pass between Elijah
Wheat to Franklin Hayes, this time putting McCracken up 34-27 with
8:02 left in the 4th.
With Dyer County driving into McCracken
County territory late in the 4th, senior cornerback Kiael Waldon came
up with a massive interception and returned it 90 yards for a
touchdown to seal the win for the Mustangs.
Franklin Hayes had
three touchdowns on the night on top of 6 receptions for 121 yards.
Tymar Halliburton chipped in with 3 receptions for 83 yards and a
touchdown.
The Mustangs finish their regular season schedule
next week against Muhlenberg County at Marquette Stadium.
Ryan Mathis rushed for three touchdowns, threw two touchdown passes and caught another as Graves County rallied to beat Christian County 44-36 Friday night at the Stadium of Champions.
Mathis caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Cody Goatley, but the Colonels blocked the extra point, putting the Eagles on top 6-0 in the first quarter. JaDonavin McNeal, who scored five touchdowns on the night, scored his first on a two-yard run, but the extra point was no good, leaving the score 6-6.
Mathis then found Nelson Browning on a 68-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter. The Eagles converted the two-point try and led 14-6. McNeal answered with a 13-yard touchdown run, but the Colonels failed on the two-point try, and Graves led 14-12 with 6:05 left in the first half.
Mathis then connected with Drew Cooper on a 36-yard touchdown pass, putting the Eagles up 20-12, and they carried that lead into halftime.
Early in the second half, Mathis scored on a 1-yard touchdown run, and after the Eagles converted the two-point try, they led 28-12 with 7:11 left in the third quarter. But the game swung on the play before Mathis scored.
The Eagles' starting running back and linebacker, Cody Goatley, was injured on a big run and never returned to the game. The Colonels (4-4, 2-2) took advantage, scoring four straight touchdowns.
The first was a 41-yard touchdown run by McNeal. The second was a pick 6 by Jason Polley. The last two were on short touchdown runs by McNeal, giving Christian County a 36-28 lead with 11:01 left in the game.
Mathis scored on a two-yard touchdown run and converted the two-point try, to even the score 36-36 with 3:48 left. The Colonels were forced to punt near mid-field, but a fumbled snap gave the Eagles the ball on the County 36-yard line with 1:28 to play. Mathis then scored his last touchdown of the night on a five yard run. Clint Mckee converted the two-point try, sealing the win for Graves County.
The Eagles (4-4, 3-0) can win the Class 5A
District 1 title next Friday night at Owensboro.
The undefeated and top-ranked Mayfield Cardinals
wasted little time Friday night in clinching the Class 2A District 1
title, beating Ballard Memorial 50-2 in La Center.
The
impressive part for Mayfield tonight? The Cardinals needed just eight
plays to achieve the running clock status. After the first eight
Mayfield plays on offense, the Cardinals led 36-0 with 4:40 left in
the opening quarter. Mayfield needed just a few more plays to make it
50-0 in the 2nd
quarter.
Mayfield hosts Webster County next Friday night at 7pm.
