In an effort to recognize all Murray High School Sports athletes, the first-time Murray High School Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held, Friday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. inside the Bob Rogers Auxiliary Gym. Prior to the ceremony, a reception will be held inside the gym at 6 p.m. and is open to the community.

Over the past year, MHS has been in a planning phase for implementation of an overall Athletic Hall Fame.  Currently, MHS supports a Football and Baseball Hall of Fame, however, there are no opportunities for all sports.  A committee comprised of coaches and administrators, both past and present, have formulated a plan and process for induction into the MHS Athletic Hall of Fame.  “We recognize the historical importance of the football and baseball hall of fame currently in place and these will remain,” said Jim Baurer, MHS athletic director.

The MHS Hall of Fame ceremony scheduled for Feb. 12 includes a group selected by ballot of the Hall of Fame Committee.

This first group to be inducted includes the late Preston “Ty” Holland, former coach of the MHS Football Team.  Holland’s contributions to athletics are woven into the history and heritage of Tiger Pride. A 1924 MHS graduate, Holland was a member of MHS football, basketball, track and baseball.  A 1928 MSU graduate, Holland coached MHS Football and basketball from 1920 to 1973.  Also an MHS teacher, principal, athletic director and assistant superintendent, Holland was the winningest football coach in the state with 249 wins, and currently ranks 21st all-time in wins among Kentucky High School Football Coaches.

In addition to Holland, the following will be inducted into the MHS Hall of Fame:  Members of the 1961 and 1974 Football Championship teams, Eli Alexander,  (deceased) ,a 1949 MHS graduate, Tony Boone, 1976 MHS graduate , Jimmy Boone (deceased)  1952 graduate, Steve Doran , 1966 MHS graduate, Don Faughn,1964 graduate, Bill Furgerson  (deceased), a 1947 MHS graduate, John Hina (deceased), former MHS administrator and coach, Tim Masthay, a 2005 Murray High School graduate, Velvet Milkman , a 1983 MHS graduate,  Cary Miller, 1963 graduate, Steve Porter, 1975 graduate, Mel Purcell, 1977 MHS graduate,  Dub Russell  (deceased) a 1934 MHS graduate, Dr. Dick Stout, a 1956 MHS graduate, and Roy Weatherly, (deceased) a 1956 MHS graduate,

There are many deserving individuals that were not selected this year but will be selected in future years.  These include members of the Football and Baseball Hall of Fames as well as other individuals, teams and coaches,” Baurer said.

All MHS alumni, Tiger family and friends, as well as the community, are invited to attend this event.  Guests are also invited to attend Saturday night’s special game recognition of all inductees.
