McCracken County High School senior Kam Chumbler will continue his basketball career at the next level, officially signing to play basketball at Shawnee Community College in Ullin, IL on Monday. Chumbler is the first MCHS student-athlete to sign a scholarship to play college basketball.

Chumbler started his high school career at Lone Oak High School. When Lone Oak, Reidland, and Heath combined before the 2013-2014 season, it was a change Chumbler embraced for his senior season.

“I really loved it,” Chumbler said. “I thought it was going to be hard at first, but the coaches treated us all the same, and all of us players really got to know each other. We all became best friends and I would do anything for them. We all became a band of brothers.”

Earlier this week, Chumbler was selected as an All State Honorable Mention. He was also selected to the All District Team in 2013 and 2014, the All Purchase Team in 2014, McCracken County High School’s Mustang Madness Player of the Game in 2014, Region 1 Tournament Most Valuable Player and KHSAA Sweet 16 All-Tournament Team Member.

The Mustangs made it to the KHSAA Sweet 16 Tournament in Lexington thanks to a last-second shot in overtime from Chumbler in the regional championship game that lifted the Mustangs to a 43-41 overtime win over Marshall County.

“That was definitely one of the happiest moments of my life,” Chumbler said. “It all happened so fast. Looking back now, it’s all like a blur. But I’ll never forget it.”

Chumbler was the starting point guard on a team loaded with talented guards. McCracken County Head Coach Burlin Brower loved Kam’s leadership.

“Kam’s leadership is irreplaceable,” Brower said. “He’s not only a leader in games but also every day in practice. He leads on the court and off the court and is one of many examples of why we were able to succeed this season.”

One of the things Chumbler is most excited about is knowing his basketball career will continue for at least a few more years.

“I’m extremely excited. I’ve really got to know Coach Sparks and to play for him is such an honor,” Chumbler said. “I can’t wait to get started.”
