Since 2009, the Mayfield Cardinals have been nothing but dominant on the football field. However, it has been a different level of dominance for the Cardinals at home during the decade.

Mayfield was 79-1 at home coming into their matchup with McCracken County, with the only loss coming to the same Mustangs in 2015. Friday night the Mustangs clipped the Cardinals once again at War Memorial Stadium, this time in a 45-35 thriller.

McCracken County led from the first play of the game. Literally.

On 1st-and-10 from their own 20-yard line, McCracken County quarterback Elijah Wheat found Franklin Hayes for an 80-yard touchdown strike to make it 7-0 McCracken County just :13 seconds into the game. The Mustangs would quickly strike again as Wheat found Hayes for a 30-yard touchdown pass. The 14-0 score held up for the rest of the first quarter.

Mayfield evened the score in the 2nd quarter when quarterback Jayden Stinson found Alonzo Daniel for a 9-yard TD to make it 14-7 McCracken County at 11:53, and Markesio Jackson rushed it in from five yards out to tie the game with eight minutes to play in the half.

But the first half scoring was far from over.

McCracken County's Hunter Bradley ran it in from a yard out to give the Mustangs a 21-14 lead with 5:14 in the 2nd quarter. On the next series, Bradley did it again from the 1-yard line to make it 28-14 Mustangs with 2:23 in the first half.

Mayfield's Jayden Stinson marched the Cardinals down the field and found the end zone on a 14-yard run to cut the McCracken lead to 28-21 with 41 seconds left in the half.

But the Mustangs added an exclamation point with 0.7 seconds left, as Wheat found Zander Mayes for a 31-yard touchdown to give the Mustangs a 35-21 halftime lead.

The Cardinals got right to work in the 3rd quarter. Mayfield operated the screen play to perfection with Stinson finding Kade Neely for a 38-yard touchdown to make it 35-28 McCracken County with 7:02 left.

The Mustangs countered almost immediately. Wheat and Hayes connected for a third time, this time for 50 yards and a touchdown to make it 42-28 McCracken County.

Late in the third, Cardinal tailback Kylan Galbreath ran off-tackle for a 20-yard score, and it was 42-35 Mustangs with 4:55 in the quarter.

In the final period, the Mustangs' defense came up with two massive defensive plays when Ian McCune and Hunter Vlach both picked off Mayfield passes. Vlach's interception set McCracken County up in Mayfield territory with just over six minutes left in the game.

The Mustangs drive stalled at the 21-yard line, but junior kicker Ben Schofield provided a clutch 38-yard field goal attempt for the final score of the night to give the Mustangs the 45-35 road win.

McCracken County opens up district play next week at Marshall County. Mayfield hosts Graves County in the annual "Battle of the Birds."
