The Cardinals used a dominating defensive performance with an opportunistic offense to build a 21-0 1st quarter lead before Murray would find their first score. Connor Guthrie provided the first score of the night on a 28-yard quarterback keeper to make it 7-0 in the opening minutes.
After an interception by Mayfield’s Derrick Smith on the ensuing Tigers drive, the Cardinals found the end zone three plays later, this time as Kent Trey Matthews scampered from 20 yards out to make it 14-0 with 7:10 left in the 1st.
The Cardinals defense would strike again on the next Murray possession. This time it was Kylan Galbreath who would pick off the Murray pass and return it 20 yards for the touchdown with 6:10 left in the first.
Murray would convert on their next possession as Hunter Utley found Jaiden Jackson to make it 21-7. Mayfield would immediately respond as Micah Haley booted a 35 yard field goal to make it 24-7 midway through the quarter.
After a Murray field goal late in the first half, Mayfield would provide the momentum changing blow just before the half as Guthrie got his 2nd rushing touchdown of the night, this time from five yards out to make it 31-13 at the half.
Mayfield would find the end zone three more times in the 3rd to put the game away. The Cardinals advance to the state semifinals to play at Walton-Verona next Friday night at 6:00 pm Central Time.
