The Cardinals streak of four consecutive KHSAA State Football Championships came to an end last season, but this year’s Mayfield squad is poised to start a new streak this season. During the current 6-game winning streak, the Cardinals have dominated their opponents; outscoring them by a combined score of 354-70 and averaging 59 points per game. In the first two games of the playoffs this season, the Cardinals have achieved a running clock scenario (36 point lead or greater) in the first half of both games.
The Cardinals offense has featured a near even split of the ground game and the passing game. As a team, the Cardinals have passed for 2,491 yards and rushed for 2,162 yards. The Cardinals feature two different running backs with over 500 rushing yards. Junior Kent Trey Matthews leads all rushers with 641 rushing yards along with nine touchdowns. Sophomore Travon Haliburton has 531 rushing yards and four touchdowns for the Cardinals.
Mayfield has featured two different quarterbacks this season. Sophomore Jaden Stinson has played the most snaps at quarterback for Mayfield, passing for 1,669 passing yards and 22 touchdowns on the season. Junior Connor Guthrie has become a dual-threat quarterback, passing for 534 passing yards while rushing for 252 yards and ten touchdowns altogether.
The Aces have found their groove in the second half of the season, winning six of their last seven games after losing three of their first five. Similar to Mayfield, Owensboro Catholic has been pounding their opponent, outscoring them 336-69.
The Aces and the Cardinals square off at Mayfield’s War Memorial Stadium Friday night at 7:30 pm.
