Mayfield Falls to Warren Central at State Tourney

LEXINGTON - Dre Boyd had 18 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two blocks as Warren Central  beat Mayfield  73-55, Thursday night in the final first-round game of the 102nd Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet Sixteen.

The Dragons will meet Madisonville in Friday night's quarterfinals.

After trailing 16-9 at the end of the 1st quarter, Mayfield rallied in the 2nd quarter, outscoring Warren Central 17-14, and trailed only by four, 30-26 at halftime. The Dragons stretched the lead to six at the end of the 3rd quarter, 49-43.

Warren Central (21-11) pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Mayfield 24-12.

The Dragons dominated Mayfield (25-8) in almost every statistical category. Warren Central shot 47 percent from the field (27-57) and 37 percent from the 3-point line (7-19). They were also 12-15 at the free throw line (80 percent).

Meanwhile, the Cardinals shot just 42 percent from the field (21-50) and 21 percent from the 3-point line (4-19). They shot 9-14 from the free throw line (64 percent).

The Dragons outrebounded the Cardinals 34-29. Mayfield committed 16 turnovers. Warren Central had 9. The Dragons bench outscored Mayfield's bench 31-8.

Tayshaun Bibb finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds for Warren Central. Aiyontre Pillow finished with 13 points.

Carson Guthrie led Mayfield with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Kent Trey Matthews also scored 12 points, while Kade Neely finished with 11 points.
