Former Mayfield High School football coach Paul Leahy, who led the Cardinals to two state championships during the 90's, passed away Tuesday at the age of 72.

"The community of Mayfield lost a great one today," current Mayfield Coach Joe Morris said. "Coach Leahy had a huge impact on my years as a player and a coach. He made a huge impact on so many people. He was a great coach and teacher. He will be missed by many."

Leahy, who played collegiate football at Murray State, came to Mayfield in 1971, and was an assistant to Coach Jack Morris for 22 years. During that time, Mayfield won four state championships.

Leahy became head coach after Morris retired in 1993, and won a state title in his first season, as the Cardinals knocked off Prestonburg in the Class 2A title game, 13-12.

The Cardinals won another state title under Coach Leahy in 1995, beating Beechwood 28-27 in the Class 1A championship game. Leahy finished with a 73-12 record over six seasons as head coach at Mayfield.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Byrn Funeral Home in Mayfield.
