Daviess Ends McCracken's Season with 34-21 Win
By Eric Chumbler
WESTERN KENTUCKY - The Daviess County Panthers pulled off one of the more surprising upsets around the state Friday night, upending the McCracken County Mustangs 34-21 Friday night.

The Panthers become the first ever team in Class 6A District 1 to beat McCracken County. The Mustangs were a combined 22-0 against the district in their first five seasons.

The pivotal point in this contest came early in the 2nd quarter when the Mustangs had the football with a 4th-and-goal at the 1-yard line. Sophomore quarterback Elijah Wheat handed the ball off to senior TaeShawn Allen who was stopped for a 2-yard loss and a turnover on downs. The very next play, Daviess County handed the ball off to Landon Newman who took it 97 yards for a touchdown to give Daviess County a 6-0 lead with 9:35 in the 2nd quarter.

It would be Newman who found the end zone on the next drive for the Panthers, this time from just 2 yards out to give Daviess County a 13-0 halftime lead.

The Mustangs would respond to start the 2nd half, driving all the way down the field in five plays and capped off by a TaeShawn Allen 1-yard touchdown run.

Daviess would respond. Landon Newman found the end zone for a 3rd time, this time on a five yard run on 4th-and-goal at the five to give the Panthers a 20-7 lead with 2:47 left in the 3rd quarter. Less than a minute later, Elijah Wheat found senior Landon Scheer on the right sideline for a hard fought 27 yard touchdown.

But the Panthers would prove to be too much. With 2:04 left in the game, Landon Newman provided the exclamation point with his fourth touchdown of the game, this time on a 46-yard carry to give the Panthers the 34-21 lead and the win.

Daviess County travels to Central Hardin for the Class 6A Regional Championship game next Friday night.
