A lot of programs across the nation like to say they’re a football program, but few football programs have a program resume like the Mayfield Cardinals. Mayfield is ranked 4th in the nation in all-time wins with 887 wins and 3rd in Kentucky behind Highlands (895 wins) and Louisville Male (892 wins) (stats courtesy of MaxPreps). The 2019 Mayfield Cardinals look to add to the rich tradition of the fourth winningest program in the nation.

The Cardinals fell just short of the school’s 13th state football championship last season, losing to Christian Academy-Louisville in the state championship game, 34-26. While the Cardinals graduated a wealth of talent, they also bring back a fair share of talent, including key pieces of the Cardinals offense.

Quarterback Jayden Stinson will be the lone quarterback out of the gates in 2019. Stinson split time with Connor Guthrie last season, passing for 2,931 yards and 35 touchdowns and only four interceptions in 2018. And a majority of his receivers are back as well, including Mayfield’s top three receivers statistically in 2018 in Kade Neely, Diaz Perry, and Alonzo Daniel. Neely had 924 yards receiving and 14 touchdown receptions in 2018, Perry had 786 yards receiving and nine touchdown receptions, and Daniel had 490 yards receiving and four touchdown receptions. The Cardinals also return three offensive lineman in Wyatt Inman, Colin Price, and Lucas Henley.

The Cardinals return seven starters on the defensive side of the football. Mayfield returns one starter on the defensive line in Tre Arnold. Three different starters are returning at line backer with Kade Neely returning at outside linebacker and Tyus Jackson and Markesio Jackson next to him. And the secondary will also be a strong point with Alonzo Daniel, Derrick Smith, and Travon Haliburton all returning for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals open up the 2019 season with a bit of an unfamiliar opponent with Lausanne Collegiate (TN) before beginning their stretch of familiar rivals in Hopkinsville, Paducah Tilghman, McCracken County, and Graves County. The two notable district matchups to watch will be when the Cardinals travel to Princeton to take on Caldwell County on October 4th and also when the Cardinals host long time rival Murray on October 25th.
