Coach Evan Merrick enters his 6th season as the head coach of the Marshall County Marshals, and Coach Merrick and this season the Marshals enter Class 6A after spending four seasons in Class 5A.

The last time the Marshals were in Class 6A was in Merrick’s first season as head coach in 2014. The Marshals entered Class 5A in 2015, but reclassification this past offseason bumped the Marshals back to Class 6A. Marshall County’s district now includes McCracken County, Henderson County, Daviess County, and Apollo (Owensboro).

Marshall County is expecting sophomore Quinn Smith to take over as the starting quarterback in 2019. The Marshals look to continue to expand their offense in the flex option under Smith. Marshall County input the flex option last season to some solid results; averaging just over five yards per play last season. The offense did lose two key skill players from last season in quarterback Tyler Stokes, who is focusing on basketball for his senior season, and Austin Riley who was the leading rusher in 2018 and second leading receiver.

Marshall County does return senior Ty Buchmeier, who proved to be valuable in the running game and passing game. Buchmeier rushed for 430 yards in 2018 with six rushing touchdowns and 118 receiving yards. Luke Wyatt also returns for his senior season for Marshall County. Wyatt rushed for 431 yards in 2018 with three rushing touchdowns. A key newcomer for Marshall County will be the addition of senior Bryce Flatt. Flatt has been a key contributor to the Marshals on the basketball floor, and his 6’4” frame could prove valuable as a wide receiver and defensive back on the football field.

The one area in 2019 look to improve the most is on the defensive side of the football. In 2018, the Marshals gave up over 40 points in seven of the 10 games they played. The defense for the Marshals this season will be anchored by Buchmeier, and seniors Dawson Smothers, and Devon Evans.

The Marshals do not shy away from talent in their 2019 schedule. The two key district matchups for Marshall County this season are at home. The Marshals welcome 6-time consecutive district champion McCracken County on September 20th and longtime 6A District 1 power Henderson County on October 4th to Carroll Traylor Stadium.
