Robert H. Florence, 84, of Calvert City passed away at 1:29 am on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at his residence.

Mr. Florence began his career at Union Carbide while still a student at the University of Kentucky where he obtained a degree in civil engineering.  He worked there for 14 years but he is best known for Florence & Hutcheson Consulting Engineers which was founded in 1965 and co-owned with David Hutcheson until it was sold in 1986. The original F&H team rapidly began serving the KY Transportation Cabinet and municipalities throughout the state until in the 1970’s when work was contracted with Departments of Transportation in Tennessee, North Carolina and then expanded throughout the Southeast.  Some of the projects the company designed included the Paducah I-24 Downtown Loop, the William F. Natcher/Green River Parkway, the Benton By-Pass, four lane from Paducah to Mayfield, the GM Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, the Watterson Expressway I-264 in Louisville and numerous other civil engineering and geotechnical projects.  Over the years F&H developed a solid reputation with federal, state, county and municipal  agencies, as well as industrial, commercial and private developers and property owners.  The firm was known for combining technical resources and a wide scope of services to implement the most complex and extensive projects with a flexibility to ensure responsive, one-to-one client service and proactive, visionary solutions.  F&H was known for exceptional and passionate client service.

Robert was a Kentucky Colonel, Duke of Paducah, Member of Ducks Unlimited and also  a member of multiple other civic organizations.  He  was an avid sportsman who loved hunting, fishing, golfing or most anything sports related, and his retirement at age 55 gave his more free time to enjoy these passions. Bob was  a huge UK Basketball fan.  He also loved dogs, especially Labrador Retrievers.

He is survived by his wife, Joy Drake Florence; four daughters, Brenda Boyarski and husband Phil, of Paducah, Becky Hunt and husband, Greg of Paducah, Jenny Walker and husband, Chris of Calvert City, Heather Leighton of Calvert City; eleven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert H. Florence Jr.   His parents were Bruce David Florence and Myrtle Cutsinger Gage.
