James Clyde “Jim” Covert, 79, of Paducah, died Thursday, October 20, 2016 at New Haven Assisted Living.

Jim was born on October 10, 1937 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to the late Merle and France Locke Covert.  At the age of 14, Jim “fibbed” about his age so he could enlist in the United States Air Force, going to great lengths to conceal his true age.  He then worked as a postman and police officer in Detroit, MI and Chicago, IL.  Jim worked for the ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) Bureau in Louisville, KY before taking over leadership of the Paducah Bureau.  During this time, Jim was also taking classes at Murray State University, where he graduated before earning his master’s degree in Social Work at University of Louisville.  Once becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Jim was credited for making a considerable difference in the availability of mental health services for the residents of several surrounding counties.

A faithful Catholic, Jim was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister, sang in the choir and participated in DeColores.  One of his greatest joys was serving as a softball coach for his daughter’s teams when they were young.  He was also a skilled woodworker, sailor, tool and die maker, and locksmith.  He was a member of Kiwanis and was a former Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are his two daughters, Francine Chumley and husband Marsh of Owensboro and Julia Kotter of Paducah; grandchildren, Kristy Johnson and husband Jeremy, Melissa Kotter, and Olivia Covert; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Johnson and Trinity Covert; and nieces and nephews, Bill Covert, Tara Covert, John Hazinski, Joi Hazinski Pokerwinski, and Jason Hazinski.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clorinda Amelia Turri Covert; son, Jimmy Covert; sister, Madilyn Hazinski; brother, Bill Covert; and his parents.

A memorial mass will be held at noon Monday, October 24, 2016 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with Father Bruce McCarty officiating.  Memorial visitation will begin at 11am Monday at the church.  Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
