Dr. John Metcalf, M.D., age 73, passed away on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Integra Healthcare of Cobden, IL.  

Dr. Metcalf was born in Phoenix, AZ and grew up in Paducah, KY. He graduated from Paducah Tilghman High School in 1962. He completed his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University in 1965, and continued on to earn a medical degree from Northwestern University in 1969.

Dr. Metcalf honorably served in the Army, based out of Fort Sam Houston, during the Vietnam War from 1971-1973. He was part of the 14th Medical Detachment (MC) in the 44th Medical Brigade, and was deployed to the 67th Evacuation Hospital at Pleiku, Vietnam. Dr. Metcalf was awarded a Bronze Star Medal, National Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal for his service to our country. 

Following the war, Dr. Metcalf completed a medical residency at Duke University and completed a medical fellowship at University of California San Diego. He continued his medical career as an Assistant Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, and later in private practice in Kentucky before retiring early due to health issues.

Dr. Metcalf was known for his outgoing personality, sense of humor, and curly red hair. He enjoyed traveling, and was able to attend the 1972 summer Olympics in Munich and winter Olympics in Hokkaidō, Dr. Metcalf was an avid reader and had an intellect like few others.

Dr. Metcalf is survived by his daughter, Jessica Metcalf; his two sons, Chris Metcalf and Andrew Metcalf; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Metcalf and his mother, Lois Metcalf Willet; and brother, Dr. James Metcalf.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, July 14th, 2018 at Milner & Orr Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Paducah with Chuck Walter officiating and military honors presented.  

Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until the 10:30 am service time on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Milner & Orr Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Paducah.
