Charles Laurence Woods, 98, of Paducah, died Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Ray & Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center.

 

Charles was born in Cynthiana, KY on December 1, 1919 to Charles Laurence Woods, Sr. and Gertrude Huerkamp Woods.  He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Kentucky before being employed by DuPont in Louisville, KY.  Charles married Patsy Drane before volunteering for the United States Navy at the beginning of World War II.  He served as an officer on the destroyer escort, USS Eichenberger, in the Pacific Theater.  After receiving an honorable discharge, Charles returned to Louisville, KY to work for B.F. Goodrich, where he was promoted to assistant plant manager.  In 1966, he was appointed manager at the B.F. Goodrich plant at Calvert City, KY and retired from that position in 1982.  In addition to his education at UK, Charles received an advanced degree from the Sloan School of Business at MIT.  He was a Rotarian from 1966-89, served as president of the Chamber of Commerce and was appointed chairman of the Board of Vocational Education for Kentucky by the governor.  In addition, he was a candidate for Mayor of Paducah and Kentucky State Representative.  Charles and family were longtime members of St. Thomas More Parish.

 

Surviving are four children, Charles Laurence Woods III (Suzanne) of Louisville, KY, Elizabeth Woods (Sherman) of Paducah, James M. Woods (Vicki) of Paducah, and William A. Woods (Robin) of Paducah; five grandchildren, Margaret “Maggie” Woods, Caroline Woods Jordan (Ryan), Emily Woods Morehead (Cody), McKenzie Woods, and Audrey Woods Nee (Philip); and four great-grandchildren, Geneva and William (Woods) Jordan, and Mason and Maddox Morehead

 

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Patsy Drane Woods; five sisters; and his parents.

 

A funeral mass will be held at 10am on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with Rev. Brad Whistle officiating.  Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.  There will be no visitation.
