Margaret Ann McCullough Sherman

July 19, 1922 - April 17, 2018

Born Wednesday, July 19, 1922, in Tipton County, Tennessee, Margaret was the daughter of the late Jesse McCullough and the late Eva (Baucum) McCullough.

She was preceded in death by her brother John McCullough and sister Carol McCullough Weeks.

In 1942 Margaret married Kenneth M. Sherman, who preceded her in death. To this union were born Peggy Carol Sherman Riley (R. C.) of Benton, Kentucky, and Kenneth Michael Sherman (Debbie) of Columbia, Tennessee.

Ken was drafted for WWII on his 21st birthday and after his basic training, Margaret joined him in Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky, where she worked for the Civil Service in the Ordinance Dept. Later she joined him at Fort Rucker, Alabama. When Ken shipped out in March 1944, Margaret returned home to Memphis.

Margaret worked at Sears in the credit department and at Gerber’s Department Store as telephone operator. Always Methodist, Margaret and Ken were charter members of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, where Margaret then served as administrative/financial secretary for thirty years. Afterward, she worked at Mitchell and Horrell Telecommunications in Memphis until May 1983, when Margaret and Ken retired (Missouri Pacific Railroad) and moved to a farmhouse in Hampshire, Tennessee. Margaret served as a docent at the James K. Polk Ancestral Home in Columbia until handing the work over to Ken, who then led tours for more than 20 years.

After living in Hampshire for twenty-five years, they moved to Benton, Kentucky, in 2007 to be near their daughter, Peg. Ken died in Benton on Memorial Day 2010.

Margaret put her retirement energy into her life-long love of antiquing. Doing business as Love Creations by Maggy, she put thousands of miles on her van as she bought and sold at shows across the country well into her eighties. She continued to maintain vendor spaces in local venues when doing shows was no longer practical.

Margaret was known affectionately as Meme by her grandchildren, Paige Eaves (Forrest Robinson) of Irvine, California; Kelly Eaves of Birmingham, Alabama; Chris Eaves (Leslie) of Germantown, Tennessee; Abby Sherman Forsythe (Andy) of Spring Hill, Tennessee; Russ Sherman (Cindy) of Collierville, Tennessee. Great-grandchildren, Ariel Batton (Dan), Kate and Morgan Eaves, Chris and Michael (Caitlyn) Forsythe, Emily, Erin and Jack Sherman, and great-great-grandchildren Eleanor and Madeline Forsythe, and Luke and Chance Batton.

She loved her extended family, grandsons by marriage Keith (Jan) and Roy (Jennifer) Riley, and great-grandchildren Hannah, Cole, Chase and Collin Riley.

A memorial service of celebration will be held Thursday, April 26, at 1 p.m. at Benton First United Methodist Church where Margaret was a member.

Gifts in memory of Margaret may be made to The James K. Polk Memorial Association (www.jameskpolk.com <http://www.jameskpolk.com>) and the Benton First United Methodist Church Helping Hands Food Pantry (www.bentonfirstumc.com <http://www.bentonfirstumc.com>).
