Mr. Joe Wayne Mathis, age, 82 of Benton, KY passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017, at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, KY.
Born Saturday, January 12, 1935 in the Unity community of Marshall Co., KY, he was the son of the late Guy Mathis and the late Ethel (Washam) Mathis. He was retired from the City of Benton where he worked in maintenance. Prior to working for the City of Benton, he was employed at B.F. Goodrich plant in Calvert City and he and his wife Dwanna were former owners of Fleming Furniture in Benton. His favorite pasttimes were carpentry, gardening, and old westerns. He was also an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan. He was a 70 year member of Benton Church of Christ.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Dwanna (Smith) Mathis of Benton, sons, Gary Wayne Mathis, wife Jo Ann of Murray, KY, Steven Lee "Steve" Mathis, wife Gloria of Sharpe, KY and John Edward Mathis, wife Connie of Crittenden County, KY. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren; Stephanie Leah Adams, Wesley Mathis, Kelly Sowers, Lucas Mathis, Carly Parsley, Samantha Mathis, Ryan Mathis, Ashley Sharp, Sonny Mathis, and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, James "Jimmy" Mathis and sister, Darlese Prince, husband Joe Brooks.
A Funeral service will be at 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Collier Funeral Chapel located at 211 West 5th St. Benton, KY 42025, Mark Ray and Sonny Rommleman officiating.
Interment will follow in Benton Cemetery, Benton, KY.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Collier Funeral Home, 211 West 5th, Benton, KY.
