Byron Cates

Byron D. Cates, 90, of Puryear, TN passed away Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Murray Calloway County Hospital. Mr. Cates was born on March 14, 1928 in Rockwood, TN to the late Oliver and Mary Elizabeth Cates. Byron enjoyed playing golf and tending to his garden. He built both of the homes that he and Mary raised seven children in during their 67 years of marriage. He also raised hogs and cattle. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife, Mary Cates of Puryear; two daughters, Paula Harris (Tom) of Dayton, OH, Amy Rueswald (Fritz) of New Waverly, TX; five sons, Dan Cates (Carol) of Willis, TX, Mark Cates (Jo Ann) of Puryear, TN, David Cates (Rose) Cantonment, FL, Byron Cates, Jr. of Middleton, OH, Bradley Cates (Ginger) of Carlisle, OH; 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Cates is set for 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at St. Leo Catholic Church, Murray. Father Brandon Williams will officiate and burial will follow at Puryear Cemetery. His family will receive visitors from 5 pm-8 pm on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Imes Funeral Home & Crematory, 311 N. 4th Street, Murray.
