Billy Joe Outland, age 86, of Calvert city, died Monday, July 31, 2017 at the Ray and Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center in Paducah, Ky.

Mr. Outland is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bodie Carolyn (Mann) Outland;  his daughter, Melissa Carol Outland, of Calvert City;  his son, Jeffrey Joe Outland and his wife, Heidi Binegar Outland;  and two granddaughters, Margaret (Meg) Elizabeth Outland and Kathleen (Kate) Olivia Outland, all of Gilbertsville.  He was preceded in death by his father, Elmus Leon Outland; his mother, Jewell Hazel (Lovins) Outland, both of Murray, Ky.; and three brothers, James Outland, Charles Outland, and Jackie Outland.

He was born in Brandon, Ky. and grew up in Murray.  In 1951, he joined the United States Air Force where he proudly served as a staff sergeant.  After his military service, Mr. Outland worked for 30 years in maintenance at Pennwault/Arkema Chemical facility in Calvert City.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Calvert City where he was active in church work and greatly respected by the community.  He enjoyed a love of gardening that he passed on to both of his children.  He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and shared that love of the outdoors with his son. 

More than anything, Mr. Outland loved his wife and children and adored his granddaughters. He was a true gentleman with a soft heart and was loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 85 S. Ash St., Calvert City, KY 42029. Rev. Dr. Jim Ewing will officiate. 

Interment with military honors will follow the service on Monday, August 7, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West, Hopkinsville, KY. 

Friends may visit with the family between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 4, 2017 at the Collier Funeral Home, 211 West 5th St., Benton, KY 42025.

Mr. Outland will lie in state at First Baptist Church, Calvert City from 10:00 until the funeral hour at 11:00 a.m.
