William E. Cockerill, age 91 of Metropolis, Illinois passed away at 7:05 am on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at his residence.
Graveside services will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at the Metropolis Memorial Gardens. Rev. Louis W. Brinker will officiate.
William was retired from Honeywell, which was formerly known as Allied Signal. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Metropolis. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. He participated in the landing on Omaha Beach with the 1061st Combat Engineers.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Allene (Kersey) Cockerill of Metropolis, IL; his daughter, Jan Rudolph and husband Larry of Paducah, KY; his sister, Helen Simpson of Poway, CA; and several nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Cora (Sidener) Cockerill; and his sister, Dorothy McGowan.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016 from 11 am to 12:30 pm at the Miller Funeral Home in Metropolis, Illinois.
