Jewel passed gently into the loving arms of JESUS on Thursday morning, June 25, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO at the age of  92 after a short illness. 

She was born on April 15, 1923 in Metropolis, IL to James F. Bolden and Nora Robbins Bolden. In 1941 she married Hubert W. Shelby who predeceased  her in 2001. They were married for 60 years and had two children who survive her. A son, Sherman and his wife, Pat of Metropolis and a daughter, Alice June (AJ) Shelby-Gilbert and her husband, Robert of Springfield, MO. She worked for the Good Luck Glove Factory for many years until moving to Rockford, IL in 1963. She worked at the Tonka Toy Factory for a couple of years before getting a job with the Rockford School System. She started out as a Jr. Clerk at Jefferson Junior High School. While employed there she witnessed the transformation of Jefferson Jr High School to Jefferson High School. Over the years she advanced to different ranks in the School system and upon retiring,  she was the Executive Secretary to the Rockford Superintendent of Schools. After retiring, she and her husband, Hubert moved back to Metropolis. 

She was one of the founding members of the First Assembly Of God Church in Metropolis which is now Lighthouse Assembly of God. She lived her life as a testament to her Lord and Saviour. She was always very active in her church. 

She loved gardening; reading, quilting and family get togethers. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, a brother, Sonny, two sisters, Louvine Tucker and Annis Ringstaff . She is survived by her two children and their spouses, eight grandchildren, several great grandchildren, her sister, Mary Virginia “Jenny” Jeanes and husband, Doyle, several nieces and nephews and two special nieces, Melva Harrison and Melodee Thomas.

Funeral service will be at 1:00pm on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church with the Revs. Charles Harrison and Kim Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow at Metropolis Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 10:00am to funeral hour on Thursday at the church.

God granted her almost 92 years of good health until the last 3-4 months of her life. She was greatly loved by so many people and will also be greatly missed by her family, church family and friends.   

Contributions may be made in her name to Metropolis Lighthouse Assembly of God.
