Jessie Sanders, 83, of Los Angeles, California, formerly of Metropolis, died Monday, November 21 at her home.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening November 29, 2016 from 6 to 8 PM at Miller Funeral Home in Metropolis, IL. The funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. David Deem officiating. Burial will follow at 2 pm at Obion County Memorial Gardens in Union City, Tennessee.
Dr. Sanders was a retired educator who worked in the Massac County Unit 1 School District as a guidance counselor and coordinator of the gifted and special education programs. She was a past president of the Illinois Council for the Gifted, and was a featured presenter at educational conferences around the country. For 25 years she directed the Shawnee Accelerated Studies Program, a summer enrichment program for gifted students throughout the Southern Illinois region.
She earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in education from Murray State University, and her Ph.D. in education from Southern Illinois University.
Survivors include a son, Lee Sanders, and his wife Hanna Lim, of Los Angeles, California.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hughey and Jessie May Butler; her stepmother, Mary Dott Butler; and her husband, Fred William “Bill” Sanders, Jr.
