Edith Virginia Black, age 94 of New Columbia, Illinois passed away at 1:30 am on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at the Massac Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Frank Forthman Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Metropolis Memorial Gardens.

Virginia worked at the Good Luck Glove Factory in Metropolis for 20 years, was a lifetime member of the Farm Bureau, a member of the Homemakers group, extension council, and New Hope Baptist Church. She was active in the Massac County Youth Fair, was a 4 H leader, where she was able to impact the lives of a lot of children. She was an avid quilter, knitter, gardener, and loved to read books.

Virginia is survived by her son, Hartzel Black and wife Loralea; son-in-law, Larry Flynn; grandchildren, Sheri Donahue and husband Jeff, Jeri Miller and husband Scott, Mark Black and wife Trista, Gina Strothmann and husband Kevin, Gay Hammond and husband Rob, and Ryan Flynn; 8 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; siblings, Lula Dickson, Earl Smith, Verl Smith, Frances Goins, and Barbara Rohrer; several nieces and nephews.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Thedora (Moll) Smith; husband, Theodore Black; daughter, Joyce Flynn; son, Eugene Lavern Black; siblings, Iva Hines, Lavern Smith, Charles Smith, and Carl Smith.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 from 9 am to 11 am at New Hope Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials may be in Virginia’s name to Lourdes Hospice, PO Box 7100, Paducah, Kentucky 42002 or Masonic Cemetery #10 c/o Bobby Travis, 5734 Black Hill Road, Belknap, Illinois 62908.

Pallbearers will be Bob Brewer, Don Turner, Bryson Hammond, Scott Miller, Matt Brooks, and Jeff Donahue.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Black, Ryan Flynn, Kyle Strothmann, Kent Korte, Chad Goins, Trent Smith, and Brad Hammond.
