Robert Louis Hughes, 83, of West Paducah, died Monday at 12:25 pm at Baptist Health-Paducah.
Known as “Little Punch” by his family, Robert was born February 15, 1930 in West Paducah to the late Vernice M. “Punch” Hughes and Elsie Jane Cathey Hughes. He was 2nd generation owner and operator of Hughes Market, which was opened in the 1920’s. Even after his unofficial retirement, Robert was often seen sitting in the store either working the cash register or offering his opinion to his son, Alan Hughes, who now runs the store, or socializing with customers. He was also the mastermind behind Hughes Country Sausage, which was distributed in local groceries and remains popular today.
Robert was a lifetime member of Harmony Baptist Church, and a longtime member of Grahamville Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Marilyn Y. “Bonnie” Patterson Hughes; a daughter, Marilyn Perkins and husband Tommy of Mayfield; a son, Alan Hughes and wife Patty of West Paducah; four grandchildren, Jennifer Perkins Keitz and husband Nick of Lexington, Michael Perkins and wife Hilary of Mayfield, Clay Hughes and Evan Hughes both of West Paducah; one great-grandson, Logan Keitz; a sister, Louise Gibson of West Paducah; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Michael Hughes; and a sister, Ruth Hendrix.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm Friday at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah with Rev. Andy Shelton and Rev. Jewell Barrett officiating. Burial will follow at Palestine Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-9 pm Thursday at the funeral home.
