Susan Thomas, 80, of Golconda, Illinois, passed away at her residence on Friday, January 9, 2026, surrounded by the love she spent a lifetime giving to others. Susan was born on November 9, 1945, in Belleville, Illinois, to the late Arthur and Alice Schanot Schmidt.

Susan was a devoted and faithful member of Brownfield Baptist Church in Golconda, Illinois, where her church family meant the world to her. Her faith guided her life, and she found deep joy and purpose in being an active member of her church.

The ultimate homemaker, Susan poured her heart into everything she did. She had a special gift for sewing and treasured the time she spent quilting with her dear friends at Brownfield Baptist, lovingly known as the Brownfield Quilters. Those moments of fellowship, laughter, and shared creativity brought her great happiness.

Susan shared a lifelong love of travel with her husband of 62 years. Together, they journeyed across the country in their RV, embracing every mile along the way. Susan truly believed in “enjoying the journey as much as the destination,” a philosophy that shaped the way she lived and loved.

Known for her feisty spirit and quick wit, Susan was never afraid to stand up for what she believed in, always striving to do what was right and for the greater good. She was loving, compassionate, and unfailingly generous-always there for anyone in need. Her warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Verna Hugh Thomas of Golconda, Illinois; one daughter, Kelly Gillespie (Jim) of Newnan, Georgia; her sons, Troy Thomas (Susie) of Bethalto, Illinois and Benjamin Thomas of Five Points, Alabama; her brother, Thomas Schmidt (Diane) of Isle of Palms, South Carolina; and her four beloved grandchildren, Jake Thomas (Tiffany), Sean Thomas (Sammie), Emily Welch (Jeff), and Joey Gillespie, each of whom held a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Arthur and Howard Schmidt.

Susan is no longer in pain, but her love, laughter, and gentle strength will live on through the many lives she touched.

There will be no services at this time. Milner & Orr Funeral Home and Cremation Services are in charge of arrangements.
