In Sonny Sears, the Lord has called home surely one of His most good and faithful servants. Born in Paducah in 1931, Sonny’s family was chased out of the city by The Great Flood and settled in the country near Folsomdale. The move would put him on a course to cross paths in the fifth grade with Marian Lowe in their shared class at Lowes Elementary. Together, the pair built a life together anchored by faithful and diligent service to each other, to their loving family, to their church, to their country and to their community. Lovingly devoted to each other for 73 years, Sonny and Marian were the proud parents of children Johnny, Cathy, Bill and Christy, loving in-laws, compassionate grandparents and doting great-grandparents.
After serving as a member of the United States Marine Corp. during the Korean War, Sonny and Marian returned to the Lowes community where Sonny took a job climbing telephone poles with the rural telephone cooperative. For the next 40 years, Sonny helped to establish rural connectivity through his community and countless others and then steadfastly lead the cooperative through times of influential change as general manager for two decades. During that time, Sonny proudly represented West Kentucky Rural Telephone to the nation while serving as President of the National Telephone Cooperative Association.
As a leader until his death in Lowes Church of Christ, Sonny showed the path of righteousness to fellow church members for more than 70 years.
Through his love for fishing and hunting, Sonny brought joy to family and friends while hunting in Alaska, Texas, South Dakota, Montana, Alabama, while walking fields and farms of Western Kentucky and fishing on his home away from home, Blood River.
Now that his significant work on Earth is done, Sonny’s influence will be cherished by Marian, their children, sons and daughters-in-law Debra Sears, Billy Swiney, Kelly Sears and Joe Flanigan, as well as their many grand children and great grandchildren. He is survived by sisters June Hart and Jane Morganti and brother-in-law Don Sparks. He joined in Heaven his parents, Clarence and Merry Lou Sears, his sister Janet, sister-in-law Carolyn Sparks and brothers-in-law Joe Hart, Bob Mabry and Johnny “Tossy” Morganti.
