Rev. Wendell Ordway, a faith-filled, loving, and thoughtful Christian servant, passed away on April 12, 2026, in Calvert City, Kentucky. He was born on October 27, 1933, in Crittenden County, Kentucky, and lived a life marked by devotion to God, family, education, and service to others.
Wendell was known by many simply as Wendell, and he carried himself with quiet strength, humility, and compassion throughout his long life. He devoted 75 years to the ministry as a Cumberland Presbyterian Minister, faithfully preaching, teaching, and shepherding congregations with a steady and caring spirit. He retired from Vaughn's Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church after a lifetime of service, and he preached his last sermon in August of 2025 at Piney Fork Cumberland Presbyterian Church, closing his ministry as he had lived it, with grace and dedication.
A lifelong Christian, Wendell’s faith was the foundation of all he did. He believed deeply in the power of prayer, the importance of Scripture, and the call to serve others with kindness and integrity. His ministry touched many lives over the decades, and his presence brought comfort, encouragement, and wisdom to those who knew him. He was also a Kentucky Colonel, an honor that reflected the respect he earned through his character and contributions to his community.
Wendell valued education and pursued it with determination. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Bethel College and later earned his Master’s from the University of Tennessee in Martin, Tennessee. In addition to his work in the ministry, he taught school in Tennessee and Kentucky, sharing his knowledge and shaping the lives of students with patience and care. His commitment to learning and teaching reflected his belief in the importance of preparing others for a better future.
He is survived by his two daughters, Sheryn Ann Ordway of Madison, Tennessee, and Marcia Jean Ordway of Dallas, Texas; and his son, Alan Wendell Ordway, and wife Alicia, of Richardson, Texas. He also leaves behind a legacy of love and faith that will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Wendell was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anna Jean Cooper Ordway; his parents, Earl Ordway and Lizzie Mae Watson Ordway; three sisters; and four brothers. He was part of a family that shaped his early life and helped form the values he carried throughout his years.
Those who knew Wendell will remember him as a man of deep faith, gentle wisdom, and steadfast devotion. His life was a testament to service, perseverance, and love. Though he will be greatly missed, his memory will remain a blessing to his family, friends, church family, and all whose lives were touched by his ministry and example.
