Doreen 'Renie' Barger, a devoted educator whose passion for teaching touched countless lives and whose vibrant spirit illuminated every friendship, passed away peacefully on May 20th. She was surrounded by the love of her family and friends.
Born on November 1st in St. Joseph, Michigan, Renie cultivated a deep love for learning from a young age. This passion led her to a distinguished career in education, primarily as a Special Education teacher at Cedar Street Elementary in Mason, Michigan, for 31 years. Known for her enthusiasm and unwavering belief in each student's potential, Renie created a classroom where curiosity was sparked, and all abilities were celebrated.
Renie had a profound love for people. Both on stage and in the classroom, Renie shared her knowledge and abilities with others. Her life was a testament to her generous spirit. She cherished every moment spent with her wide circle of friends. Whether it was book club meetings, dinner parties, rehearsing lines, or quiet conversations over a cup of coffee, Renie found immense joy and comfort in the camaraderie and shared laughter of her companions. Her ability to listen, offer advice, and bring people together made her a truly special friend to many.
Renie is survived by her husband, Don Barger; brother, David (Dorothy) Blunt; son, Jeff (Laura) Pomeroy; Don’s children, Amy (Brian) Thornton, Sara (Adam) Innes, and James (Sarah) Barger; 15 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and a host of adoring friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Don and Doris Blunt.
A memorial service to celebrate Renie's life will be held on June 9th at 2 PM at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah, with visitation from 12-2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to Market House Theatre at 132 Market House Square, Paducah, KY 42001; Community Kitchen at 1237 Martin Luther King Jr Dr, Paducah, KY 42001; or Mayfield Rotary Scholarship Fund, c/o Mayfield Rotary Club, PO Box 485, Mayfield, KY, 42066.
Her legacy of service, kindness, endearing friendships, love of reading, Elmo, rubber ducks, and Christmas will forever be cherished and remembered.
