James H. “Elvis” Cain, 86, of Benton, Kentucky, and formerly of Trigg County, Kentucky, passed away on May 5, 2026, at his place of residence.

James was born on May 18, 1939, to the late Carl and Evangeline Jones Cain in Trigg County. James devoted 37 years of his career to serving as a DOT engineer, where he contributed his knowledge, skill, and strong work ethic to the betterment of his community and state. In addition to his work for the state, he was a licensed land surveyor.

Faith was an important part of James’ life. He was a Christian who found strength and comfort in his beliefs and in the fellowship of his church. He was a devoted member of his church community and treasured the relationships and spiritual support he found there.  He and his wife, Nelda, were responsible for the initiation of the breakfast program at Palma Methodist Church, which was a testament to their selfless nature and devotion to nurturing others. Folks traveled from all over to fellowship and eat breakfast on Saturday mornings at the church.

He was also a proud Freemason and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Trigg County, where he valued the enduring principles of brotherhood. His involvement in the lodge was another expression of his character and his desire to be part of something meaningful and lasting.

James was also an enthusiastic fan of UK basketball, and he enjoyed following the team with the same loyalty and enthusiasm he brought to so many other parts of his life. Whether spending time with loved ones, attending church, or cheering on his favorite team, he appreciated the connections and traditions that gave life its richness.

Above all, James cherished his family. He held a deep and lasting love for Nelda, the love of his life. Their bond was one of enduring devotion, beginning in their early teens, and carried through handwritten letters of promises and proclamations of love, dating, marriage, children, and a lifetime built on their love and devotion for one another. The memory of that love was a treasured part of his life’s story.

James is survived by his two sons, James A. “Tony”  Cain (Cyndee) of Tennessee, and Craig A. Cain (Kim) of Harvey in Marshall County, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Justin Cain, Zachary Cain, Clayton Cain (Samantha), and Sarah Cain; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Nelda Cain; one brother, Ronald J. Cain; and his parents, Carl and Evangeline Jones Cain.

Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at the Life Celebration Center of Filbeck-Cann, 1003 Poplar Street, Benton, KY 42025.
