World War II ended seventy years ago, claiming more than 60 million lives from 1939 until 1945, making it the deadliest conflict in modern history. Most baby boomers grew up hearing war stories from their grandparents, who are now in their 80s and 90s, or are no longer alive.

Discovery Park of America will present the WWII Living History encampment on the this Memorial Weekend. The event will pay tribute to the 70th anniversary of the war’s end and the people who fought in it.

The encampment will be open during regular park hours, 10:00 am until 5:00 pm each day.

Guests will experience the sights and sounds of WWII as the Marines of 2/8 Easy Company show what life looked like during the battle of Okinawa, the last major battle of the war. The presentation will consist of infantry men, their personal weapons, equipment, effects and WWII era vehicles, including an M5A1 Stuart Tank as one of the highlight attractions. There will be at least two weapon demonstrations daily.

Wrapping up the weekend, there will be a special ceremony on Memorial Day at 2:00 pm featuring WWII veteran Charles Whitby as guest speaker. Whitby will share stories of his firsthand experiences during the war. In addition to Whitby’s speech and special recognition of visiting Veterans, a 21- gun salute is planned, and singing of The National Anthem will close the commemorative ceremony.  All military personnel will be admitted free on Memorial Day Monday.

Later this year, the park has commissioned an Alvin York traveling exhibit, which will be on display from October 1st through December 31st.

Discovery Park is located at 830 Everett Blvd. in Union City, TN.  You can see the 2015 calendar of events by visiting the website at www.discoveryparkofamerica.com .
