Over the past decades, imported fire ants have established themselves throughout the southern United States.  They cause painful stings that can injure or kill wildlife, domestic animals, and humans. Their large mounds and nests can cause damage to equipment and structures, as they chew on insulation, cause short circuits in electrical equipment.

Fire ants now occur in much of Tennessee, and many mounds have recently been found in Land Between The Lakes in Stewart County. Other mounds have also been located in Kentucky's LBL land in Trigg and Lyon counties.

To combat their spread, LBL officials are conducting an environmental assessment project. The public is invited to comment on the project during July.
