The Secretary of State's office says there are more than 3.1 million people registered to vote in the general election next week.

The Courier-Journal reports that is an increase of about 41,800 — or 1.4 percent — compared to registration numbers from the primary election in May.

Democrats and Republicans have both gained registrations since the May 20 primary. Currently, figures show that 53.5 percent of voters are registered as Democrats, 38.7 percent are registered as Republicans and 7.8 percent are registered as "other," which means they identify with either independent or minor party affiliates.

In Jefferson County, figures from the clerk's office and the county Board of Elections show local registration increased by about 10,000 from the May primary.
