A report just released by Kentucky law enforcement officials calls for abolishing the office of constable or stripping away its law enforcement powers.
The Kentucky Law Enforcement Council says the office has outlived its usefulness and is no longer considered essential to modern law enforcement work.
The report concluded that the 500-plus constables around the state performed one-quarter of 1 percent of all law enforcement work and received little or no training for the job.
The recommendations come almost two months after a Graves County Constable was arrested on wanton endangerment charges in connection to a traffic stop where he allegedly pulled a gun.
