A Kentucky transportation official says the state plans to set up 12 regional offices to issue special driver’s licenses that will be needed in less than a year to board domestic airline flights.

Media outlets report that the transportation official, Matt Henderson, told state lawmakers on Monday that the state eventually would like to have 28 to 30 regional offices.

Henderson is vehicle regulation commissioner in the state Transportation Cabinet.

The state faces an Oct. 1, 2020, federal deadline to start issuing Real ID driver’s licenses.

Henderson says the cost to operate and staff 28 regional offices would be about $16 million a year, but the sale of the special licenses would help defray the expenses.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports licenses will cost $24 for four years and $48 for eight years.
