Kentucky Leaders Sued for Teachers' Pension Woes

A group of current and retired public school teachers has filed a lawsuit asking a judge to order Kentucky's leaders to "perform their constitutional and statutory duties" by adequately funding the Kentucky Teachers' Retirement System.
 
The suit was filed Tuesday in Franklin County Circuit Court in Frankfort.
 
Defendants are Gov. Matt Bevin, Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers and outgoing House Speaker Greg Stumbo.
 
The suit says prior governors and legislatures consistently failed to adequately fund the pension system, resulting in an unfunded liability exceeding 
$24.4 billion by mid-2015. The suit says the system's condition has become more "dire" since then.
 
The suit says that failure violates the state and federal constitutions and Kentucky law.
 
Bevin spokeswoman Amanda Stamper says the governor is "intent on fixing the country's worst funded pension system."
