Jenean Hampton told the Bowling Green Daily News in an exclusive interview she believes she has done a "fantastic job" and would be "a shoo-in." But while Bevin has said he will seek a second term in November, he has yet to file for the race and has not said whether Hampton will be his running mate.
"At this point, I would like to serve ... but that's the governor's call. I got into this journey with a prayer (and) I will go wherever the spirit leads," she said. "I'm just waiting on" Bevin.
Bevin has said repeatedly he will run for re-election in November, despite not raising money for an election that is less than 11 months away. Democrats are lining up to challenge him, with Attorney General Andy Beshear raising more than $1.16 million so far and state House Minority Leader Rocky Adkins raising more than $620,000. Former Auditor Adam Edelen launched his campaign last week and has one of his first fundraisers this week.
Bevin has been noncommittal when asked who his running mate will be. Asked if Bevin will keep Hampton, the governor told the newspaper: "We'll see."
"It's not a given that I will, and it's not a given that I won't," Bevin said. "She is a very dear friend for whom I have tremendous respect. She's been a fantastic lieutenant governor."
The newspaper reported Hampton was disappointed in her tenuous position, but said her time as lieutenant governor has been "one of the most joyous assignments of my 40-year career."
"My heart for service has grown," she said.
