A former University of Kentucky student is accused of placing hidden cameras inside women's restrooms around the campus.

WKYT-TV reports the investigation began after a janitor found a writing pen that concealed a stealth camera inside a restroom.

UK Police Chief Joe Monroe told the station the investigation into who placed the cameras took five-and-a-half months. Monroe says the victims range from college age down to minors.

Ryan Matthew Smith of Garrard County faces 20 charges including numerous counts of voyeurism.

LEX18 reported police statements saying 7 of the 16 victims were in the UK College of Medicine bathroom, while the other victims were filmed at Smith's Lexington apartment, a home in Woodford County, and a lake house near Paducah. The investigation started in March and Smith was arrested Thursday.

The 24-year-old told both television stations he did not want to talk about the allegations. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and will be in court on Sept. 4.
